One of the finest game strategy games on PC s are produced by Sid Meier. They make one of the most engaging civilization simulation video games around. Popular titles like Railroad Tycoon and Civilization have always continue to deliver the most heralded game play. Thus it no surprise that the company move their popular titles from the PCs genre toward PlayStation 3 platform. And a good job they did, 2K and Firaxis together manage to translate that PC experience successfully towards the Playstation 3 Platform.

In Sid Meier Civilization revolution game play, the idea is to take a civilization in the stone ages and through strategic planning built it up to the Space Age. When you choose which civilization will be your base, the leader of that civilization also have added bonus for your game play. For example if you chose Cleopatra, you might get additional interest on gold reserves, at the medieval age, population growth is increased by two additional percentages. There five difficulties level in this game. Use the first level as a guide. As you get more proficient, try the more difficulty level.

To play this video game, you can choose multiplayer mode using LAN or Single player mode. For those who had played this game under PCs, you will know the game can take several weeks to complete. But under Playstation 3, it doesn’t last as long but not in the least as unsatisfying. In the Playstation 3 version. Micro managing of the game has also been removed. The graphics are good, bright, colorful and engaging with animation to the characters. The sound track are satisfying as well. Overall the transition form PCs based to the Next Gen game console like the Playstation 3 is well executed.

The controls of the game are also simple. You don’t need to be a computer engineer to understand how they work. Though the game didn’t have the depth of the Pcs platform, the game play in the Playstation 3 version is as satisfying and as well as entertaining.

Nintendo Wii “Backyard Baseball” review

September 14th, 2008

The latest version of Backyard Baseball 2009 was just released by Atari to take advantage of the Nintendo Wii Video game Controls. The wide and varied style of pitches and types of baseball hits manage to come truly well with the Nintendo Wii Wiimote. One only has to flick the Wiimote to hit the ball and use the Nintendo Wii nunchuk for on-base advancement.

The video game comes in six game modes. You can chose between quick play, a pickup game, tournament play, season play, a home run derby and an all-star game. There are several sub options within each game mode as well. For example, in season play, you can be a coach and do what a “real” coach can do.

To play the video game, use the directional pad as a batter for the type of swing you want. Next flick the Wiimote to take the swing. As in real life, timing is crucial. Hit the ball right and you be rewarded with an adrenalin rush! Miss it and it’s a Strike Out for you! And if you want to use a special hit or pitch, you have to use both the Wiimote and nunchuk. Use the “Z” button to call up the menu for the special hit or pitch. However, you can only have these option enabled in the video game when you scored enough points.

Overall the game feel is reasonable and entertaining. Audio include some baseball sound and commentary from Sunny Day and Jack Fouler wannabes. The 3D graphics are not too bad in itself…sporting some Japanese stadium themes. I would say it appeal to kids of all ages but if you wish for a more fulfilling baseball experiences then this Nintendo Wii version of backyard baseball is not for you. So long as you don’t expect the moon and the sun you be fine with this video game.

Atari could actually had done more to improve the game feel using the Nintendo Wii game control system. We are talking here about THE generation of video game playing using the Wii Mote. The realism and immersion currently is as close as it can get to the real thing before virtual reality. So far no game company had yet to fully capitalize on the Nintendo Wii control system.

X Box 360 “Ninja Gaiden II” review

popular video game

This video game is a beautifully designed, graphically alluring, and completely not the kind of game you want your eight year old to play. But if you are looking for the ultimate fighting demons and monsters type of video game, X Box 360 has one just for you.

The features in this very realistic battle to the death video game are enhanced to the point that you won’t believe your eyes. The blood looks incredibly real, even if you are playing very close to the screen.

If you are familiar with the original “Ninja Gaiden” you will find the “Ninja Gaiden II” has some dramatic new changes such as bigger areas to fight in, more opponents to fight and enlarged the size of opponents. There are also new weapons to choose from which you can upgrade as you move forward through the video game. X Box 360 has done a bang up job improving on what was already a great game. They have kept the aspect of magic but there is no more importance in making better monsters or demons than solving puzzles and such.

This video game does include a story line but the best part of the game is the fighting and killing of the beasts and the friends that go along with them. The weapons of choice are the swords and the ability to upgrade your sword enables you to kill bigger and more dangerous monsters. Only certain swords will kill certain monsters, so the levels you complete, the better your sword is, the better chance you have to make it through this addictive video game.

The original “Ninja Gaiden” in my opinion, was a bit more challenging than what X Box 360 created with this second edition. However, that could simply be because I am accustomed to the first game and thus the second one seemed a bit easier, although still quite challenging and entertaining. Newcomers to the video game might not think so, as they have not had the experience from the first edition; either way, this video game is well worth the time and energy you put into it and I recommend it if you are looking to kick some serious monster butt.

Nintendo Wii: “Carnival Games” review

August 26th, 2008

Carnival video game

One of my most favorite memories growing up was going to the fair every summer. The best part of it was playing the games, which we all know now were rigged and only a certain percentage of people actually won. That didn’t really matter then, but now we want to even the score. The Nintendo Wii has helped to do that with the creation of its video game, “Carnival Games”.

Play begins when the player creates his or her character and the only drawback to this is that you can’t customize or change your characters features like hair, clothes, etc. The video game begins as you take your character into the carnival to start playing games. The Nintendo Wii’sCarival Games” gives the player two modes to play in; 1) single-player mode where the player can earn prizes and 2) multi-player mode where the players compete against each other. The video game has twenty-five different games to play, which are most of the favorite games you remember playing as a kid when you went to the real carnival.

This video game does have some problems with the controllers; players must be quick and accurate to get passed the round and it seems there have been times that the players are faster than the controller. Nintendo Wii, I am sure, will reformat this problem in future video games, but in this one, it does seem to be an issue with some of the games the player must play.

In order to receive prizes the video game awards these based upon how well you do in four levels. The better you do the better the prizes; much like at a real carnival; if you want the ten foot tall stuffed monkey, you had better be real good at tossing the rings.

All in all the Nintendo Wii has done a pretty good job replicating the carnival atmosphere in this unique video game. I recommend “Carnival Games” for families to play together on game nights or at parties. It is definitely a video game that both children and adults will enjoy.

Nintendo Wii “Fishing Master” Review

August 18th, 2008

popularvideogame.com
Ever since I was a little girl I have loved to go sit out by a pond and fish. It never really matter to me if I caught anything or not, it was just fun trying. I’ve tried different video games to replicate the real act of fishing and found them rather boring and quite unrealistic. However, the Nintendo Wii has a version of “Fishing Master” that really caught my attention. As video games go, this is as close one can get to fishing without having to deal with worms, hooks, and tangled line.

There are really two types of formats when playing fishing video games; 1) an arcade type of game that can be fun, but lacks reality and 2) realistic fishing modes that can make you feel as though you are actually catching fish. The Nintendo Wii has combined the two to make this video game experience something fun for whatever type of mode you wish to play in. The characters themselves are cartoon in creation; however the act of using a fishing rod makes the video game more realistic for the player.

There is only one mode of play in this video game however there is a setting for multiplayer’s in the Battle mode. In the single player campaign mode the player advances through the stages by catching different types of fish. The video game offers tournaments and challenges throughout the game play and players earn points which they use to buy items such as bait and other specialty items.

Players stand facing the water and as the player moves from end of the beach to the other, they will be able to catch different fish from those points. The fundamental aspects of the video game are very easy to learn right from the start.

The Nintendo Wii’s version of “Fishing Masters” is what I believe the most entertaining and realistic approach to video game fishing; it is fun, challenging and creative. It is as close as you might get to the real thing without having to fight bugs, baiting hooks, and smelling like you’ve rolled in dead fish. The only problem there is that I can see is that you’ll have to buy fresh fish from the market if you want to have your catch as dinner.

Playstation 3, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008

August 17th, 2008

I grew up in a family of golfers and being a golfer myself, I’ve always been intrigued by how well video game developers can capture the essence of the real sport. Playstation 3’s version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 is as close as I’ve ever seen to actually playing with the pro himself. Want-to-be professional golfers around the world have had great difficulty mastering this extraordinarily challenging video game as I have often watched some of the best gamers in this area battle it out and finish the round with less than perfect scores.

As one of the top sellers in the video game industry, Playstation 3 did not disappoint its fans with this eighth edition to the collection of most desired games on the market. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 is not a disappointment at all as with each new addition to this video game series, the graphics and simulations get better each year.

In years past the recreation of Tiger Woods himself has been less than perfect, however in this edition, Tiger looks and moves in more realistic manners, making the experience even more thrilling to video game enthusiasts around the world. One of the great features about the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 edition is the fact that you can upload your own face onto one of the golfers, and put your golfing skills to the true test against Tiger himself.

One of the most impressive features of the Playstation 3’s shot confidence mode of the video game is how the game will track the golfer you use and all the shots you make and it remembers the club you used or how you played the hole; it will also remember the score you got for that particular hole. A great advantage so that you can learn from your mistakes or improve you game playing.

No doubt that Playstation 3 made a hole in one with this edition of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 and it is sure to cause you as much joy as aggravation when you, the virtual golfer, begin this video game experience.

Nintendo Wii “Top Spin” review

August 8th, 2008

popular video game

Expectations was not disappointing when the Nintendo Wii version of Top Spin video game was recently released by 2K Sports. With the unique games control of the Nintendo Wii game console, the game play is certainty very much alive and realistic . Players can hold the Wiimote like a tennis racket. The nunchuk is also used in the video game process to control the player as well as for aiming the ball. There are three game modes for this game. First is the exhibition mode for single or double players. Second is the events mode with the games in tourney style settings. Lastly is the Party Mode with three categories.

You can play with multiplayers with the Nintendo Wii  machine provided you have extra sets of controller for a head on game. But what is disappointing is that there are no online game mode available.  Furthermore the video game doesn’t comes with career mode. To sum it off, the video game has no true permanence. They just good for short quick play.

The audio of the game is adequate…nothing outstanding here, which left just the video graphics. The Nintendo Wii is THE generation of video game console today. It is capable of so much more than what is shown here in this video game.

I guess for a party setting when you just wanna kill some time, this game will fit the bill perfectly. Its a series of mini video games… so great if you the type who the impatient type. But for those who prefer more substances than the “shoot them up type”, it can really do with both a career mode and online mode to prolong video game play.

However due credit has to be given to the video game for the implementation of the Nintendo Wii games control. The overall feel is that the video game does feel “real”. I guess this is the Nintendo Wii main selling point. Graphics can be improved though to boost the “real” feeling. Its really a shame when the full capability of the Nintendo Wii is not utilized. My overall conclusion is that this video game can be further improved especially to cater those who like to invest more time in game play. Perhaps the next version of this will really take advantage of the video game controls of the Nintendo Wii.

Xbox 360 Unreal Tournament 3

August 3rd, 2008

Popular video game

Better late than never, finally the Unreal T ornament has been released for the Xbox 360. This video game had already been released for the PCs and the PlayStation 3 since last year but what hurt the Unreal Tournament gamers for the Xbox 360 what not been able to try the game until now.

There is  a single player Campaign mode for the Xbox 360 version as well as an online mode. Though the game do have a story line its nothing to shout about as it lack any real depth.

All it does is just provide a plot for the game. Here you play “James”Reaper” Hawkins together with his sister Sarah “Jester” Hawkins fighting an alien race known as the Necris. The video game scenes are seamlessly woven into the game making the story line extremely smooth. You are also given some advantages during Campaign. You will get to earn “cards” in the match which tilts the game toward your favor in the form of increased firepower. Of course, there are also side objectives to accomplish making the game more alive.

There are several type of match that you can play in this video game. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the flag and Vehicle Capture the flag. There also a match called Warfare and a duel as well. The most challenging is warfare match where you need to destroy your enemy base before they destroyed yours.

The Xbox 360 get five new maps which were made available to PS3 via download. Some new characters are also thrown into the game but only plays a minor role. Basically the overall game does not change much from the PCs or PS3 version. The controls of the Xbox 360 works seamless with a first person shooter (FPS) scenario. Thus those new to FPS will feel right at home.

Graphics wise, The video game looks fantastic. The levels of details are good and the maps do stand out. The characters fit right into the environment of the game itself.

Although the video game is late in arrival for the Xbox 360 platform, it still managed to prove itself worthwhile for the wait, filled full with actions.

Xbox 360 Wall.E review

August 1st, 2008

Wall.E is one of the latest Xbox 360 video game that roll of the production following Hollywood style…”that is as soon as possible” We have seen countless titles that follow this format and like most, they suffer from too short a development cycle. Unlike “Tomb Raider”, most movie inspired video game don’t fare too well in the gaming industries. Wall.E is no exception.

Basically the video game follow the same storyline as the movie. Earth is polluted and needs to be cleaned up. The tasks is assigned to robots called Waste Allocation Load Lifer Earth-Class… “Wall.E”. after seven hundred years had passed, the only two things that remain on earth is one Wall.E unit and a cockroach. One day an EVE or Extra – Terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator descend on earth and turn Wall.E world upside down. At this part, the player game play will decide the outcome of the game.

The Xbox 360 version of the video game is simple enough. Players go around hunting and collecting objects solve simple puzzles etc. The game also allow you to switch between two character that is Wall.E and EVE. Game control are kids friendly. I would say easy to understand and catch on. The basic controls movement apply to both Wall.E and EVE. As mention earlier, from the time frame of the movies release to that of the game release, there are bound to be “bugs” in the game due to the short development cycle.

Players will find that the video game lack smoothness in virtually every aspect. You will find “invisible walls” when your character for no reason bump into “something.” Sometimes you will have complete control of the camera and sometime apparently not. If you seen the movie first then play the video game…You be sorely disappointed. The graphics are not even close to that you find in the movies.. I mean, it’s sad to find as a gaming guy…you see that the game developer don’t take advantage of the expansive of the Next Gen Gaming console like the Xbox 360.
